ISO Standards for Business Management Systems

  1. Stage 1 – ISO assessment – this is the follow-up stage after the initial review.
  2. Having passed the Stage 1 of the ISO System assessment, the organisation knows that the system that has been created meets the requirements of the standard on paper.
  3. The training stage will have informed staff of the changes to their previous operational approach and given them the knowledge and understanding of what to do in the future and why.
  4. The next step (if not already begun before the Stage 1 assessment) is to run the organisation’s day­‐to-day activities in accordance with the procedures written.

As the staff begins to use the ISO system, there will be areas that are discovered that do not match precisely what is needed. This is not a problem at all -­‐ so long as the changes made to the systems, to make sure it better reflects what is necessary, is made using the Change Procedure laid out by the system. That ensures that the newly re-written ISO processes remain within the requirements of the standard.

Over time, even those areas that seemed to be correct may need adapting if they result in unintended consequences. Again, this can be altered, once identified, within the requirements of the system.

The impact of these iterative changes to ISO systems, combined with the required Management Reviews (that also look into feedback from stakeholders and from auditing reports), will develop the systems to ensure the business enhances its scope, capabilities and profitability while meeting the corporate goals set out for it by the Board. This iterative improvement process will continue thenceforth, ensuring the business is always striving for, and achieving, a better and better performance.
